Take the game engine from Doom, play in space in a twisty, 3-dimensional maze with no gravity, substitute insane robots for the demons and add the additional objectives of rescuing hostages and escaping the maze before it explodes, and you have Descent. Each level is a mining colony in a small planet or moon somewhere in the Solar system. Due to your ability to fly around sideways and upside down without even realizing you're doing it, these mazes are a lot easier to get lost in than in most games. You'll also need some really good piloting skills for fighting those insane robots in tight corridors.
